Everything But Whiskey In the bustling year of 1905, the Porter Brothers rolled into Rhyolite, Nevada, with 18 wagonloads of carefully selected goods from Randsburg, determined to make their mark on the burgeoning desert town. Their store, the HD & LD Porter Store, quickly became the heartbeat of Rhyolite, catering to the diverse needs of miners, settlers, and fortune-seekers alike. From fresh groceries and crisp vegetables to sturdy mining supplies, fashionable clothing, and even the finest Studebaker wagons, their store was a treasure trove of necessities and luxuries. Customers could even rent freight animals to haul their newfound purchases, all while admiring the brothers' cheeky slogan: "We handle all good things but whiskey." Their first store, a humble establishment on the corner of Main and Esmeralda, opened its doors in June 1905, but the brothers had grander ambitions. By November 1906, they unveiled a new, impressive one-story concrete building with a basement and expansive storefront windows on Golden Street, a structure that cost $10,000 to build on a lot they had purchased for $1,200.
