Desert Big Horn Rams are majestic creatures that inhabit the rugged and arid landscapes of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. These impressive animals are known for their massive curved horns, which can reach up to 3 feet in length and weigh as much as 30 pounds. While these horns are primarily used for defense against predators and foraging for food, they also play a crucial role in the desert big horn ram's mating rituals.

With a golden head, a white patch on black wings, and a call that sounds like a rusty farm gate opening, the Yellow-headed Blackbird demands your attention. Look for them in western and prairie wetlands, where they nest in reeds directly over the water. They’re just as impressive in winter, when huge flocks seem to roll across farm fields. Each bird gleans seeds from the ground, then leapfrogs over its flock mates to the front edge of the ever-advancing troupe.

Gambel's Quail is a fascinating and iconic bird species found throughout the arid landscapes of the Mojave desert. Named after the prominent naturalist William Gambel, these quails possess unique and striking characteristics. The males showcase a vibrant plumage featuring a rich combination of gray, brown, and black, adorned with a distinct forward-curving black topknot atop their heads. Females, on the other hand, exhibit a more modest appearance with a predominantly brownish hue. Gambel's Quail are renowned for their distinctive, melodious calls that echo across the desert. They are highly social birds, often observed in small family groups known as coveys, which provide them protection and enhance their foraging efficiency.

Monday morning hike to Mary Jane Falls in the Spring Mountains. The water is really flowing as the winter snowpack begins to melt.

The hike to Mary Jane Falls is a must-see for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of Nevada's rugged landscapes!

The Mary Jane Falls Trail is fairly strenuous, climbing almost 1,100 feet in 1.6 miles. The trail starts at the bottom of Kyle Canyon, which at this point is deep, heavily forested, and surrounded by beautiful gray limestone cliffs. In the first 0.7 miles, the trail climbs 450 feet, then turns right into a side canyon and climbs another 650 feet to the falls in the remaining 0.9 miles. Coyotes are a common sight in Southern Nevada, where they can be found in a variety of habitats, including urban areas, desert landscapes, and mountainous regions. These adaptable animals are known for their intelligence, resourcefulness, and keen sense of smell, which helps them locate prey and navigate their environment. While coyotes are generally shy and avoid human contact, they can become a nuisance when they raid garbage cans, prey on pets, or cause other disruptions. It is important for residents to take measures to prevent coyote encounters, such as securing trash cans, keeping pets indoors or on a leash, and avoiding leaving food out in the open.

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a scenic waterfall located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The waterfall drops 126 feet into a clear blue pool below, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Utah. Lower Calf Creek Falls is fed by Calf Creek, a perennial stream that flows for 13 miles through a scenic canyon.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation, including cottonwood trees, willows, and box elder trees. The area around the waterfall is also home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, and desert bighorn sheep.

Out early this morning in Lake Mead. I found two more formally sunken boats in the Horsepower cove area. The discovery of these sunken boats in Lake Mead is an intriguing reminder of the lake's history and the diverse range of activities that take place there. However, it's important to approach such historical discoveries with respect and caution to ensure the safety of all involved and preserve the history and natural environment.

Glen Canyon Dam is the second highest concrete-arch dam in the United States at 710 feet, second only to Hoover Dam which stands at 726 feet.

The dam, located on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, has several advantages and disadvantages. One of the main advantages is that the dam provides hydroelectric power and irrigation water for a large area in the southwest United States. The dam also creates Lake Powell, a popular recreational area for boating, fishing, and camping. However, the construction of the dam caused significant environmental damage by flooding the Glen Canyon area and disrupting the natural flow of the Colorado River. Additionally, the dam's operations have impacted downstream ecosystems, affecting the habitats of several endangered species. The dam has also contributed to the depletion of sediment downstream, which has caused erosion and other environmental issues. Despite its benefits, the Glen Canyon Dam's negative impacts on the environment should be considered when assessing its overall effectiveness.

Up at 2:30 am and on the road at 3:30 am for a trip to Gunlock State Park in Utah.

We went to capture the waterfalls that are flowing for the first time since 2020 when the reservoir last overflowed. Had a great time with Van Phetsomphou and Mike Braunstein.

Glen Canyon Dam is the second highest concrete-arch dam in the United States at 710 feet, second only to Hoover Dam which stands at 726 feet.
The photo was taken a few years ago when the water behind the dam was much higher than today.

Corona Arch (formerly known as Little Rainbow Bridge) is a natural sandstone arch near Moab, Utah in a side canyon of the Colorado River west of Moab, Utah. The arch opening measures 140 feet across by 105 feet high. It can be accessed via a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) hiking trail (Corona Arch Trail) from Utah State Route 279 (Potash Road).

Spooky Canyon is the unofficial name of a minor, relatively shallow drainage at the edge of the Black Mountains, on the east side of the Colorado River a few miles from the Hoover Dam. The wash forms a short slot canyon through grey, conglomerate (or 'fanglomerate') rocks, only a third of a mile long, but surprisingly pretty, and quite dark in a few places due to overhanging rocks; the canyon walls take on an orange-yellow tint when illuminated by reflected sunlight.

The hike to Liberty Bell Arch is a stunning desert trip with amazing views, geologic history, and desert life.

Hit the trail early in the day to beat the heat. Hike all the way to the end of the trail (to the left after you reach the Liberty Bell) for a rewarding view of the Colorado River. In March, the cacti and other desert plants burst into bloom along the trail.

The trail is 5.3 miles out and back.

Kodachrome Basin State Park

The basin contains eroded, multicolored rock formations in various shades of red, yellow, pink, white and brown; together with the (usually) deep blue sky and occasional green vegetation this combination led the National Geographical Society to name the area, in 1949, with the permission of Kodak Film Corporation.

The one unique feature of the park is the presence of over 60 spires or chimneys of rock, known as sand pipes, which are thought to be solidified sediment that filled ancient springs or geysers, left standing after the softer surrounding Entrada sandstone weathered away. The tallest is 170 feet high. The Entrada layer makes up most of the red rocks in the park, while the overlying whitish strata are from the Dakota and Tropic Shale formations.

The coal-burning plant was active from 1976-2019
On November 18, 2019, the plant ceased commercial generation. Full decommissioning of the site is projected to take approximately three years. On December 18, 2020, the three smokestacks were demolished.

67 monolithic stone spires, called sedimentary pipes, accentuate multi-hued sandstone layers that reveal 180 million years of geologic time. The color and beauty found here prompted a National Geographic Society expedition to name the area Kodachrome, after the popular color film, in 1948.

Fisher Towers are a series of towers made of Cutler sandstone capped with Moenkopi sandstone and caked with a stucco of red mud located near Moab, Utah. The Towers are named for a miner who lived near them in the 1880s. The Towers rise 900 feet above the valley floor. (Wikipedia)

Friday afternoon hike with fellow photographer Tony Donofrio in Government Wash in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. My fourth hike out to this area and the first since late summer. Some good news is that the lake water level is a few feet higher than in August.

The Mirage will have a new owner by year’s end, MGM Resorts International sold the property to the Hard Rock International Company in 2021 for just over one billion dollars. The resort will be rebranded. Under the terms of the agreement, MGM Resorts will retain The Mirage name and brand, licensing it to Hard Rock royalty-free for a maximum period of three years while it finalizes its plans to rebrand the property. HRI, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, said it plans to rebrand The Mirage and also build a new guitar-shaped hotel on the property where the Mirage Volcano is now.

Most of the petroglyphs are from the early Basketmaker through Pueblo III eras, which range in time from 2500 to 800 years old. The panel also has more recent Ute and Navajo rock art, which you can identify by their brighter carvings and location lower on the wall.

Backyard Hummingbirds

The hummingbird action has been fast and furious the last few days, many daily battles with one male standing guard over the feeders morning to night and chasing away anyone who tries to stop by for a drink or take over his territory. He will let some of the females feed though.

The Mirage will have a new owner by year’s end, MGM Resorts International sold the property to the Hard Rock International Company in 2021 for just over one billion dollars. The resort will be rebranded. Under the terms of the agreement, MGM Resorts will retain The Mirage name and brand, licensing it to Hard Rock royalty-free for a maximum period of three years while it finalizes its plans to rebrand the property. HRI, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, said it plans to rebrand The Mirage and also build a new guitar-shaped hotel on the property.

The Bristol Charcoal Kilns were built in the 1870’s out of native stone for the purpose of making charcoal from juniper or pinion wood. The charcoal was used for smelting ore and operating blacksmith shops. The kilns operated for many years until the early 1890’s and are unique in design, craftsmanship and large size.

The buff-colored cliffs and canyons of Cathedral Gorge, called the Panaca Formation, are remnants of a Pliocene-era lakebed. About one million years ago, much of Meadow Valley (the area along US 93 from Caliente to Panaca) was covered by a freshwater lake. Sediments and gravel settled on the lake floor. As the climate changed over centuries, the lake gradually drained, and erosion started working on the exposed sediments. Rainwater and melting snow carved rivulets in the siltstone and clay shale, working their way down and widening the cracks into gullies and canyons. The "caves" area designated on the east side of the Gorge are not true caves but the canyon walls narrow down so much that explorers feel like they are in caves.

Erosion is a constant process and also occurs through the actions of freezing and thawing, heat expansion and contraction, and evaporation of moisture from deep within the rock. (Nevada State Parks)

Butler Wash Ruin is a cliff dwelling that was built and occupied by the Ancestral Puebloans, sometimes known as Anasazi, in about 1200 AD. Parts of the site has been stabilized and reconstructed, but most of it remains as it was found in the 1800s. There are habitation, storage and ceremonial structures, including four kivas. This ruin is located in a side canyon of Butler Wash, on the east side of Comb Ridge. (BLM)

A series of droughts in the 1200s, during the Pueblo IV period, led ancestral Puebloan people to move away from small, scattered hamlets and instead build large pueblo communities. The Village on the Rio Puerco (or Puerco Pueblo, for short) is a 100+ room pueblo site located near the Puerco River, a major drainage that bisects the park. The river would have been a reliable source of water for crops. Farming of corn, beans, and squash took place on the floodplains and terraces along the river. The river also made a natural travel corridor, meaning travelers and traders frequented Puerco Pueblo, carrying new ideas as well as goods.

At its largest size, around 1300, Puerco Pueblo may have been home to about 200 people. The one-story high village of hand-shaped sandstone blocks was built around a rectangular plaza. The rooms were living quarters and storage, but most activity, like cooking and craftmaking, took place in the plaza. There were also several underground rooms, called kivas, where ceremonial practices took place. There were no doors or windows in the plaster-covered exterior walls of the pueblo. Entry into the village was by ladders over the wall and across the log, brush, and mud roofs of the room blocks.

Unable to adapt to the climate change of the late 1300s, the inhabitants of Puerco Pueblo systematically abandoned the pueblo in search of a more suitable area. It was all but empty by 1380. Only the sandstone bricks, potsherds, stone tools, petroglyphs, and other artifacts and features remain to tell the tale of these ancient people.(NPS)

This 210 million-year-old conifer tree lost its battle with gravity in December 2020.
It is a backcountry hike located in the Painted Desert portion of Petrified Forest National Park.

The Fremont Culture lived in what is now Utah for about one thousand years, from 300-1300 Common Era (CE). Petroglyphs (images carved or pecked into stone) are one of the most visible aspects of their culture that remains. Archeologists named these people the Fremont Culture, for the Fremont River canyon where they were first defined as a distinct culture.

In its almost 100 years overlooking the Painted Desert, the inn has undergone many changes. The original building from the early 1920s was made of petrified wood. Today's adobe facade dates to the 1930s renovation of the Painted Desert Inn.

The national historic landmark functions only as a museum now, with no overnight accommodation and food service. Displays inside highlight the building's history, Route 66, and the Civilian Conservation Corps. There are also restored murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. (NPS)

From my hike last Friday morning. Two of three sunken boats of various sizes are now out in the open air at Government Wash. One metal barrel is weighted down with a cinder block, the barrel is empty.

Often referred to as the Niagara of the West, Shoshone Falls is a must-see attraction in Twin Falls, Idaho. At 212 feet tall and 900 feet wide, Shoshone Falls is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States surpassing the height of the famous Niagara Falls. Shoshone Falls is located on the Snake River as it carves its way through a deep basalt Canyon to the Columbia River.

Three sunken boats of various sizes are now out in the open air. One metal barrel was weighted down with a cinder block. No human remains in the barrel or nearby.

The water level at Lake Mead yesterday was 1043.67 above sea level. The lake has dropped 24 feet since January 2022 and is 185 feet below full pool. The Colorado River Basin is in its 22nd year of severe drought.

We took a backcountry trail starting at the Tepees area of the park. We followed an old park road and then up into and through Chinle Formation (225 million-year-old colorful sediment). The trail will take you into the Blue Mesa area. Beautiful scenery and we had the trail to ourselves.

The "invention of the smiley face" scene in Forrest Gump (1994) was filmed at Twin Arrows.
